Our History

From humble beginnings in Tennessee to our expanding legacy, our store was founded on the principle that quality and taste are timeless. Every generation trends change, but our enduring commitment to excellence remains constant.

The Beginning in Tennessee
As the 1940s gave way to the 1950s, the Mobley family settled into their home in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The sign out front of the first store read CD Mobley’s, a mercantile selling the usual wares- or, in the words of CD Mobley, “overalls and moon pies”.

A New Opportunity
CD was speaking to a neighbor who mentioned a brother-in-law from Fulton, Mississippi. The brother-in-law, a department store owner looking for a new way of life, was coming to town with more than moonpies in mind. Weeks later, the Mobleys swapped homes and businesses with the brother-in-law, moving to Fulton, Mississippi without exchanging money or inventory.

Establishing in Mississippi
The Mobleys ran "Mobley’s" in Fulton, starting with the initial inventory and slowly upgrading the merchandise over time. The shop was close to Tupelo, which was considered a big city at the time.

The Varsity Shop Opens
A freshly opened mall near Tupelo provided the perfect storefront for the next Mobley shop, "The Varsity Shop." CD ran the Varsity Shop while his wife managed Mobley’s in Fulton.

Expansion to Tuscaloosa
After one of the Mobley sons graduated from Ole Miss, he saw promise in Tuscaloosa and opened the first location there. This marked the beginning of the Mobley presence in Alabama.

Entering the Birmingham Market
In December, Chris Mobley, came to help at the Tuscaloosa location and decided to stay. In 1977, Chris’s brother convinced CD to try the Birmingham market. They opened "The Varsity Shop," later known as "Mobley & Sons," in Crestline Village. The shop's success led to the closure of the Fulton store, and Chris’s mother opened Canterbury Clothiers in Crestline Village shortly after.

The Third Generation
Chris’s son, Christopher, opened his own store, "Christopher Mobley," on University Boulevard. The Christopher Mobley logo, featuring a Roman numeral three crossing through an M, symbolizes the third generation of Mobley clothiers. Drawing on the impressive legacy of his father and grandfather, Christopher has created an elevated shopping experience. A second location has opened in Athens, Georgia. This expansion represents the ongoing growth and adaptation of the Mobley family business, ensuring its legacy continues to thrive.
